One of the most popular reasons (excuses) for not exercising, is a lack of time – which is not surprising given today’s hectic work schedules.

Fortunately there is a way that most of us can burn lots of calories which doesn’t take up lots of time, or involve getting all hot and sweaty.

Walking is a forgotten art! The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other whilst swinging our arms from side to side requires a lot of co-ordination and balance – it also clocks up a surprising amount of calories!

If we think about it, there are lots of opportunities for walking that we miss everyday, like walking in the morning or at lunch-time; walking to collect the kids from school; walking to the shops; hopping off the bus or underground a few stops early; always taking the stairs instead of lifts and escalators – these opportunities all add up to burning a lot of calories over the month.

The Spanish are well known for eating late, but you’ll also find them walking around a lot in the evening before and after dinner. This is because walking triggers appetite and assists the digestion process – which doesn’t happen whilst we’re sat down in front of the TV!

Buy a cheap basic pedometer from Amazon (or if you are uber cool, download an app on your smart phone). You can then measure how many calories you burn during a typical day, and then workout how easy it is to double just by walking more.
